Historical Overview of Environmental Policies
Ancient India
Environmental protection was integral to Vedic culture, with a strong emphasis on conserving forests, trees, and wildlife. This ethos was reflected in daily life, myth, folklore, art, culture, and religion.
British India
By 1860, Britain had significantly deforested various regions for shipbuilding, iron-smelting, and farming. The colonial government, recognizing the need for forest management, established the Imperial Forest Department in 1864 with guidance from German experts. The first inspector-general, Dietrich Brandish, played a key role in forming legal mechanisms to control deforestation.
